Floodplain Management Workshop – Aberdeen
April 23rd- 9am – 4 pm, April 24th, 2024 9 am – 3 pm (Central Time Zone)
The South Dakota Department of Public Safety – Emergency Management, in partnership with Brown County Emergency Management, would like to invite you to learn more about Floodplain Management from both FEMA Region 8 and State government floodplain specialists. The training event will also have informative presentations from the South Dakota Geological Survey, National Weather Service, and US Corps of Engineers. Following the presentations, a question-and-answer period will be provided by each agency.
Day One 4/23/24 9 am – 4 pm CT 4.5 CECs
- Basic floodplain concepts (100-year flood, flood fringe, floodway, etc.).
- Basic floodplain mapping (FIRM, FIS, LOMCs, etc.).
- Building protection standards (elevation, floodproofing, openings, etc.).
- Substantial damage and substantial improvement.
- Compliance and enforcement.
- Local administration and permit documentation.
- Flood insurance and the Community Rating System.
- Mitigation programs.
- BFE Determinations Using FEMA 1% Viewer ARCGIS Site.
Day Two 4/24/24 9 am – 3 pm CT 4.5 CECs
- Letter of Map Revision (LOMR) Process & Requirements.
- FEMA Advanced Topics Question & Answer (Q&A)
- South Dakota Geological Survey – Flood Information System, Q&A
- National Weather Service – Stream Gauge Sites and Weather Outlook, Q&A
- US Army Corps of Engineers – USACE Authorities: Flood Risk Reduction Projects to Emergency Response, Q&A
*4.5 Continuing Education Credits from the Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM) will be offered to Certified Floodplain Managers for each day of the workshop.
