Active and Passive Flood-Proofing for Non-Residential Buildings in SFHAs

Virtual Class – 10:30 AM – Noon – (Central Time)  December 14, 2022

Description:

Floodproofing measures are required for all buildings (with components below the base flood elevation) located within a FEMA designated Special Flood Hazard Area. The course identifies the effects of hydrostatic pressure on building sustainability and explains dry and wet floodproofing techniques utilized to mitigate against flood damage in non-residential structures. A review of the liability associated with each floodproofing option is provided. Relevant FEMA regulations, ICC building codes, and ASCE 24 are reviewed. The course provides an in-depth analysis of active and passive floodproofing options for non-residential buildings.

• Describe floods and the potential hazards to
buildings.
• Explain the differences between wet and dry
floodproofing techniques.
• Define the differences in engineered and nonengineered
flood openings and their ability to ensure
resilient structures.
• Active vs. passive floodproofing solutions and the
overall impact of ownership.
